Around 7,700 years ago, eruptions from Mt. Mazama created the pinnacles featured at this trail. Red-hot pumice and scoria flowed down the volcano at speeds up to 100 mph, leaving deep deposits. Temperatures in these deposits may have reached 750°F (400°C). As gases escaped through vents called fumaroles, they formed slender cone shapes. Streams have since eroded these deposits, exposing the hollow fumarole cones. The area continues to evolve as streams cut new valleys. At the hike's end, you'll find the park boundary and an old entry sign.
